We see it every year: spontaneous tattoos at events, vacation souvenirs in ink, and those classic “we did it because we could” moments. And honestly? Sometimes they turn into amazing stories. Other times, they become the tattoo you look at very differently in October than you did sitting in the sun with a cocktail in your hand.
Let’s talk about festival tattoos and vacation tattoos, and why taking a little extra time to think about them isn’t such a bad idea (even when everything smells like freedom and sunscreen).
Festivals and events have long evolved beyond just music and beer. These days, it’s increasingly common to see pop-up tattoo booths, flash sheets, and artists tattooing live right in the middle of the crowd.
The appeal is obvious: you’re in a great mood, feeling free, your favorite band is playing, and suddenly you think, “Yes, I want to capture this moment forever with a tattoo.”
And sometimes, that really is the perfect moment for a meaningful tattoo.
Festival tattoos are often small, quickly done, and inspired by the moment itself: symbols, minimalist designs, or something you get together with friends (group therapy, but with needles).
But that’s also where the potential pitfall lies: not every great moment automatically translates into a great tattoo decision.
Let’s be clear: we love spontaneity. But a tattoo isn’t like a festival T-shirt that becomes sleepwear after three washes.
A tattoo is more like that song you play on repeat during a road trip: fun in the moment, but something you want to keep enjoying years later.
That’s why we always recommend taking some time (ideally a few days, or even a few weeks) before putting permanent ink on your skin.
Why?
Besides choosing the right design, safety matters too. Getting a tattoo at a festival or while traveling can involve additional risks. In some situations, it can be difficult to properly assess the hygiene standards, working methods, and quality of the materials being used.
For that reason, the Dutch National Coordination Centre for Travellers’ Health Advice (LCR) and the Dutch Public Health Service (GGD) generally advise against getting tattoos or piercings while traveling. If you decide to get one anyway, make sure the studio uses sterile equipment, disposable materials, and follows clear hygiene protocols.
It’s also important to know that infections such as hepatitis B can be transmitted through blood if the skin is pierced with insufficiently sterilized instruments. For travel to parts of Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, and Latin America, hepatitis B vaccination is often recommended. If you’re unsure about your protection or destination-specific health advice, consult your doctor, local health service, or a travel vaccination clinic before your trip.
Vacations have a magical effect on the brain. You’re relaxed, exploring new places, eating things you’d never order at home, and suddenly getting a tattoo in an unfamiliar street-side studio feels like a brilliant idea.
And yes, vacation tattoos can be incredibly meaningful. They can tell a story, celebrate a journey, or mark an important life moment.
Still, it’s worth taking a step back and considering a few things:
A vacation tattoo isn’t necessarily a bad idea. It’s simply not a decision you want to make based entirely on a “let’s see what happens” mindset.
Let’s get practical. If you’re standing in a festival field, beach bar, or vacation hotspot and feeling tempted, ask yourself these questions:
Not tomorrow. Not after the afterparty. Five years from now.
It can be both, but the difference matters.
A great tattoo starts with a great artist—not coincidence and availability.
Spontaneous is fun. Rushed is something else.
The ultimate reality check.
Summer, festivals, and vacations are fantastic sources of inspiration. Some of the best tattoo ideas are born during those moments.
But the best tattoos usually aren’t the ones you get the fastest. They’re the ones you still appreciate long after summer is over and your flip-flops are back in the closet.
At BlackBear Ink, we love stories, spontaneity, and tattoos that people genuinely stand behind.
So whether you’re standing at a festival, relaxing on a beach in Spain, or simply having a great idea at home, give it a little time to settle… and then get the ink.
And if you’re unsure? Come talk to us. No glitter required. Coffee included.
