At BlackBear Ink, we use two methods to protect your fresh tattoo: Second Skin or plastic wrap (aka household foil). In this article, we’ll zoom in on Second Skin: a relatively new method that we often get questions about. Opinions vary, but here at BlackBear Ink, we’re big fans.
We’ll explain how Second Skin works, what the benefits are and answer the most frequently asked questions.
Second Skin (also known as wound film, medical adhesive film, or transparent healing film) refers to a thin, clear, self-adhesive layer applied right after your tattoo session.
Getting a tattoo causes small wounds in your skin, as the needles insert ink into the second layer of the skin. (Don’t worry, first-timers. It sounds scarier than it looks.)
With Second Skin, your skin stays moist during healing. That might sound a bit gross, but research shows that a moist healing environment promotes faster skin regeneration, reduces scabbing, lessens itchiness and irritation, and lowers the risk of scarring or uneven healing.
Within hours of getting your tattoo, your body produces wound fluid (plasma, lymph, a bit of ink or blood). This fluid may build up under the film. 🗣️That’s totally normal, babes. As long as it’s not leaking or smelling funky, it’s all good. Your body is flushing out waste and the film helps keep moisture levels balanced so your skin can heal properly.
Leave the film on for the first few days (your artist will advise how long exactly). That means you can stare lovingly at your new ink without having to do anything just yet.
Healing in a moist environment usually results in fewer, softer scabs which helps preserve more ink and improves the final look of your tattoo.
Second Skin is waterproof, so you can continue your dancing queen shower routine worry-free- as long as the film still covers your tattoo completely. (A fresh tattoo under running water = big no-no.)
We all know what the weather is like around here. Jackets on, jackets off is second nature. Second Skin protects your tattoo from rubbing against clothes, bedding or during movement.
The film acts as a barrier against bacteria, dust, dirt, and friction. This reduces the risk of infections, irritation or damage from external factors.
You get multi-day protection without the hassle of constant cleaning or changing foil. Just you and your badass new tattoo.
It depends on the size and location of your tattoo, the amount of wound fluid, and your artist’s instructions. The general rule: 2–3 days minimum, 3–6 days is common. If the film peels off, collects a lot of fluid, or starts to irritate: remove it and switch to traditional aftercare.

Most people benefit from it, but keep these things in mind:
A little fluid (plasma, lymph) is completely normal. If it’s leaking, there’s a lot of buildup, or the film lifts- remove it carefully, clean your tattoo with antibacterial soap and switch to regular aftercare.
Yes, you can shower with Second Skin. The film is water-resistant (but not suitable for full submersion). Avoid swimming, saunas or heavy sweating while healing (with or without Second Skin). Excessive moisture can loosen the film or cause buildup underneath.
If the film peels or tears, remove it completely and start standard aftercare (clean + apply aftercare cream). Don’t try to reapply a used film (it’s not hygienic).
Under normal use: No. If applied and removed correctly, Second Skin may even improve your final result. However, allergic reactions or poorly applied film (loose edges, excess fluid) can cause healing issues or minor pigment loss.
Nope! At BlackBear Ink, if your artist chooses to use Second Skin, they’ll apply it immediately after your session at no extra cost.
No. As long as the film covers your tattoo completely, your skin takes care of itself by retaining its own moisture. Only start using a thin layer of lotion or cream after removing the Second Skin.
Second Skin isn’t magic, but it’s a seriously smart way to give your tattoo the best possible start. It’s simple, hygienic, and often leads to better long-term results.
